The RYA Sailing Scheme has been developed over many years to help you get the most from your sport, whatever your ability. Like any activity, greater enjoyment comes from increased competence. Good tuition and sound advice mean that you will learn quickly and enjoy the sport more. The scheme is progressive, you cannot learn the more advances skills unless the basic techniques are mastered. After completing Levels 1 and 2, you can move on to the more advanced modules of Level 3, Seamanship Skills and Sailing with Spinnakers.

RYA Start Sailing (Level 1)
This course provides a short introduction to sailing for novices. By the end of the course, participants should have a basic understanding of boat controls, boat handling techniques and background knowledge. You should be able to sail a dinghy around a small course including all points of sailing on your own. Practical skills are backed up with relevant theory.
No experience is needed at this Level.

RYA Sailing Basic Skills (Level 2)
Upon completing this course, successful sailors will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be competent in light / medium winds with a range of dinghies and without an instructor. As part of this course you will be introduced to manoeuvring the craft as well as sailing it around a larger course.
This is not a beginner course, you must be competent at all Level 1 skills.

RYA Better Sailing (Level 3)
This course will give you more confidence in sailing skills and techniques, building on the Level 2 skills. New skills will be introduced and will help ensure you are ready to progress onto the advanced modules.
You must be competent at all Level 2 sailing skills.

RYA Sailing Seamanship Skills
On conclusion of this course successful sailors will be capable of manoeuvring a dinghy on a seamanlike manner and making seamanship decisions in moderate conditions. The course includes how to cope with some of the possible 'emergency conditions' such as sailing without a rudder or centreboard. Most work afloat will be done without an instructor aboard. The emphasis is on increasing self reliance and decision making.
You must hold a Level 2 sailing certificate.
